Sinj, a charming town nestled in the heart of Croatia, is at 80 kms (50 miles) from Makarska. It holds a mesmerising secret that has been captivating both locals and travellers for centuries. Sinjska Alka, a traditional equestrian tournament is held annually since 1717 to commemorate the victory of the Croatian army over the Ottoman Empire in 1715.
This event was declared a protected cultural event in 1964 and it has been placed on the UNESCO list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Every year on the first Sunday of August, the alkar knights, clad in the traditional attire, embodying the epitome of skill, courage and unwavering determination, will mount their majestic steeds and aim their lances at a suspended target known as the alka. (a small metal ring hanging above the track). The knights must hit the alka with their lances in order to score points and claim victory.
Imagine standing among a crowd, anticipation coursing through the air, as horses gallop with thunderous hooves... The competition is fierce and the tension among the spectators reaches its peak as each knight takes their turn, hoping to secure the glory for themselves and their families.
