Dalmatia: Oasis of essential oils

Essential oils, used for thousands of years in ancient civilizations, are highly concentrated natural substances extracted from plants through steam distillation or cold pressing, preserving unique aromas and benefits.

When we inhale the aroma of essential oils, our olfactory system will send signals to our limbic brain which is responsible for emotions and memories. This is why certain scents can evoque strong emotions or memories and therefore play significant role in aromatherapy.

Interestingly, essential oils are not true oils as they do not contain fatty acids. They are called "oils" because their numerous chemicals easily mix with other oils and fats.

Dalmatia, a beautiful coastal region of Croatia along the Adriatic Sea, is renowned for its abundance in aromatic plants and the production of high-quality of essential oils.

A small town called Dugopolje, located "behind" Split and approximately 70 km (45 mi) from Makarska, is the home of Dalmatia Aromatic Farm and Distillery which grows and distills helichrysum (sometimes called curry plant or starflower or immortelle). You can book a visit here.

IMPORTANT: Essential oils should always be diluted before being applied to your skin with one of so-called carrier oils or base oils (coconut oil, olive, sunflower, jojoba, almond, etc). Always look for PURE, organic essential oils that are 100 percent therapeutic-grade. They shouldn’t contain any additives. Find a reputable brand that you trust.
